I prepare a room in my home where the cat will spend her first days or weeks,\ndepending on her individual pace. Food and water bowls, a litter box, bed and toys\nshould be available, and ideally a cozy hideout where she can feel safe. I give her the\nspace and time she needs, and it doesn\u2019t worry us if she hides during the first few\ndays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is completely normal for a shy or fearful cat to hide at the beginning and to eat or\nuse the litter box mainly during the night. However, it is helpful to block hiding spots\nthat I cannot access (for example very narrow spaces under furniture).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I spend frequent but short periods of time in the same room with her. Every time I\nenter the room, I offer her a treat, some wet food, or a toy she enjoys, so she begins to\nassociate my presence with positive experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once she becomes comfortable in her room, I start leaving the door slightly open so\nshe can explore the rest of the house at her own pace. I may also notice that she\nbegins to meow, asking to come out of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life with My New Cat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I do not grab or pick her up. Instead, I allow the cat to approach me when she feels\ncomfortable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I pay close attention to keeping windows and doors safely closed. Windows should\nnever be left in the tilt position, as this can pose a serious risk of injury or suffocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I try to provide the best quality food I can afford. We usually recommend continuing\nwith Josera food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Until the age of ten, it is important to check my cat\u2019s dental health once a year and to\nperform a general blood test with my veterinarian. After the age of ten, regular health\nchecks are recommended every six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If my cat is not eating, not using the litter box, and remains hidden for an extended\nperiod of time, it may be helpful to temporarily place her in a crate. This allows her to\nbe more exposed to our presence and can help her gradually become familiar with her\nnew environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the cat I adopted is particularly fearful, it is very important that I sit on the floor or\neven lie down when I enter the room so that I am at the same level as her.
